"Trouble" is a multiple evocation of ghosts in darkened spaces: like scraps of memory, images appear and disappear again, intertwine, enter into a relationship with one another, pick up the thread to a connecting narrative and lose it again. In these narratives, it sometimes remains unclear who the conjuring subject is and who the ghostly figure is - the memories emerge dimly, like a noise. If one approaches them, they disappear again, like a mirage. As in Marshall McLuhan's idea of the "extended man", (self-)perceptions are always determined by the medium with which we (and ourselves) perceive - the (own) mind is sometimes (only) a technical glitch, but sometimes even one's own reflection appears dimly deformed and alien, (self-)representation is always also an alienation technique. The works of the artist Priska von Martin, born in Freiburg in 1912, seem visionary when viewed from the present; their meaning changes, just as the position of the artist herself changes with the passing of time and, finally, gains recognition. In Bogdan Ablozhnyy's expansive sculptural practice, the combination of various materials is form-giving, sometimes working with found objects in an almost archaeological manner. Mariia Andreeva uses two projectors to project images that, like the apparitions of angels, appear in flashes and disappear after a while. Mathilde Agius shows a poetic, detailed black and white recording from a pole dance studio, which she projects onto the opposite wall of the house: Public space is taken up in the act of playful evocation. Due to its (lack of) color, the recording seems as nostalgic as it is radically contemporary - a quality that can also be attributed to the urban space played with here: Past, present, and future, as Walter Benjamin describes it in his "Berlin Childhood," always lie equally on top of each other in the big city. The ghosts come from all times, linger for a moment and then vanish again - only to return at another moment, usually when they are least expected.
Medium P is an off space founded in 2019 in response to Frankfurt's Portikus, originally a scaled-down replica of the exhibition building, but based in a Kreuzberg maisonette apartment since 2021. Its mission is to combine experimental ideas for viewing art with intergenerational positions and to find an aesthetic and mode of encounter that works without the institutional and financial dependency. Art Space humorously plays with the question of (self-)institutionalization and (semi-)publicity. Its slogan is: Medium P. An Honest Institution. Each of the exhibitions is discussed and evaluated collectively (Orsi - Hohmann - Wagner - Geene) and with the respective artists.
