Project Space 17 from Pristina (Kosovo), guests at the Berlin project space WIRWIR in Berlin, present their project METAMORPHOSIS, which is about the meaning and use of public spaces. Metamorphosis aims to bring arts and culture into the dialogue in order to discuss the importance of utilizing public space. By reviving and revitalizing abandoned buildings through site-specific artistic interventions even if for a single day, the goal is to document the collective memory of a past that is rarely talked about, and to address the utilization of public space for the benefit of the community. Metamorphosis focuses specifically on buildings, monuments and public spaces that are a product of various social processes. As such, Metamorphosis endeavors to analyze the connection between buildings, monuments and public awareness, both to better understand the logic of how the corpus of public knowledge is formed and organized in public spaces, and further crystalize the active role that buildings and monuments have in society. One of the last interventions of Metamorphosis is the first modern cinema Kino Rinia in Prishtina. A building of great cultural and social value, which was on the verge of privatization, likely to be repurposed into a market or parking lot. Actions in the frame of Metamorphosis project such as in-depth research on collective memory, a site-specific artistic intervention, public discussions, and a documentary and a book on capital’s cinema Kino Rinia resulted in the ultimate rescuing of the cinema.
Project Space 17, managed by foundation Shtatëmbëdhjetë (17), is located in the oldest neighbourhood in Prishtina, Kosovo. It is a safe place that contributes to increasing cultural vitality through its range of events and activities in the format of a co-working and event space, workshop space and it plays the role of an inclusive platform where education, art and culture meet with activism to bring change. Project Space 17 often transforms into a vocal space for the work and creativity of independent local creators.
