Electronic music is the music of the technical age: tones and sounds are generated by electricity-driven machines. Based on the history of the Siemens Studio for Electronic Music, founded in 1960; Studio Stadt. Peripheries of Electronic Music mixes diverse (sound) traces into a reflection on the automation processes in the 20th and early 21st century. The exhibition project sets the consideration of electronic music as an early form of digital culture in relation to the changing urban peripheries of the two "Siemens cities" Berlin and Munich. Globally active tech corporations like Siemens are not only actors in industrialization, but have always shaped social urban development through company-owned real estate companies and ownership of land. Against this background, the artists in Studio Stadt experiment with the potential of making invisible flows and infrastructures audible.
Scharaun was founded in August 2017 by visual artist Jaro Straub as an interdisciplinary project space for art and architecture in Berlin-Siemensstadt.
The exhibition space is located in a 1930s housing complex designed by architect Hans Scharoun for workers of the surrounding Siemens factories. Scharoun himself lived and worked in an apartment in the building from 1930 to 1960. The special location of the site gives visitors a rare opportunity to visit one of Scharoun's estate apartments in almost unaltered original condition.
Since 2017, Scharaun has hosted exhibitions, talks, performances, and projects with a thematic focus at regular intervals. A selection of projects included participation in the 2018 Project Space Festival and the exhibition series "Lost Collages (by Hannah Höch). In 2019, DXIX/Projects from Los Angeles was a guest at Scharaun with the exhibition MICROLOGIES as part of the Berlin-L.A. Connect festival. The exhibition MICROLOGIES was shown in Los Angeles at Irenic Projects in Pasadena at Berlin-L.A. Connect in July 2022. From 2020-2021, during the two lockdowns, Scharaun initiated, together with guest curator Olaf Stüber, two online film programs under the title KINO SIEMENSSTADT with a special focus on the city and architecture (2020) and the complex of labor (2021).
