Özlem Sarıyıldız
Exhibition / Opening
Spor Klübü
Freienwalder Str. 31, 13359 Berlin-Wedding
"Zuhause Atem Fenster/Home Breath Window" is Özlem Sarıyıldız's first solo exhibition in Berlin, featuring a multimedia installation with sound and video material. In her work, Sarıyıldız employs the complex soundscape of the night of the 2016 coup attempt in Turkey both as a foundational element and as a metaphor to articulate the country's expansive socio-political landscape, which profoundly impacted people's lives in the ensuing years.
Built on extensive archival research of materials from the press and the Internet, the exhibition reproduces the soundscape of that tumultuous night. Sarıyıldız also gathers personal stories and narratives to create an archive of feelings, providing an emotional map of the destructiveness of the attempted coup and the violent reactions that followed. Additionally, the exhibition offers self-reflexive insights into her personal migration story and explores methods of healing from trauma, thereby positioning it as both a personal and political narrative. This invites viewers to engage with the broader implications of socio-political upheavals. The name of the exhibition, borrowed from Etel Adnan, enriches this layered narrative.
Spor Klübü
Spor Klübü (Turkish for sports club) is a project space that works primarily with international artists from Berlin and offers them space to experiment.
Spor Klübü focusses on solo exhibitions. Spor Klübü thus fills a gap, as the demand for solo presentations can hardly be met by the existing exhibition spaces in Berlin in the non-commercial sector.
Spor Klübü works across all disciplines and deals with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary art forms, among other things. In principle, all media are possible. A main interest lies in the area of installations that deal directly with space.
Spor Klübü is open to externally curated concepts from third parties as well as collaborations and once a year organises a large thematic ‘network group exhibition’ based on cultural or political quotations from past decades. When realising socio-politically oriented exhibition series, the focus is on discourse. Spor Klübü thus takes a stand on important contemporary issues in conjunction with artistic work.
Spor Klübü is a member of the project space association ‘Kolonie Wedding’ and offers the residents of the multicultural ‘Soldiner Kiez’ neighbourhood points of contact with contemporary art.
Spor Klübü is a member of the ‘Netzwerk freier Berliner Projekträume und -initiativen’ (Network of Independent Berlin Project Spaces and Initiatives) and has campaigned for political work to improve the funding structures for project spaces and initiatives and for greater visibility.
